Bad Newz Review 4.0/5 & Review Rating

Star Cast: Vicky Kaushal, Triptii Dimri, Ammy Virk

Director: Anand Tiwari

Review Synopsis:
BAD NEWZ is the story of a woman and two men. Akhil Chadha (Vicky Kaushal) runs a restaurant in Delhi. At a marriage, he meets Saloni Bagga (Triptii Dimri), who works as a chef and whose dream since childhood is to win a Meraki Star. Both meet and sparks fly. They get hitched and soon, cracks develop in their married life. They divorce after which Saloni moves to Mussoorie. She joins the hotel of Gurbir Pannu (Ammy Virk). Saloni gets attracted to him and one night, they get drunk and get intimate. She then goes to her room where Akhil comes to meet her. She sleeps with him as well. 6 weeks later, she learns that she is pregnant. Not knowing who is the father, she decides to do a paternity test on both Akhil and Gurbir. The result of the test shocks the doctor as Saloni is pregnant with twins, each belonging to Akhil and Pannu. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Story Review:
Ishita Moitra’s story is a winner. Ishita Moitra and Tarun Dudeja’s screenplay is a bit messy but overall, it is peppered with entertaining moments. Tarun Dudeja’s dialogues are funny and witty.

Anand Tiwari’s direction is decent. He keeps the tone light and it reminds one of the 90s comic capers of David Dhawan and Govinda. The use of Bollywood films and songs in certain scenes is smart. The romantic track of Akhil and Saloni will put a smile on the faces of the viewers. while their confrontation and divorce sequence is arresting. The real fun, however, begins at the intermission point once the trio learns the harsh truth. The second half is a mix of comedy and some poignant moments. The film takes a turn in the last 30 minutes and will be appreciated.

On the flipside, a few jokes don’t land well. A few innovative usage of Hindi film songs don’t have the desired impact. For instance, the ‘Saajan Ji Ghar Aaye’ joke backfires. The same happens to the gags of the second half. In fact, one gets irritated with the male characters for their childish behaviour. Ideally, that shouldn’t happen with the heroes in a film. The detective track also doesn’t have the required quirk.

Bad Newz – Official Trailer | Vicky Kaushal | Triptii Dimri | Ammy Virk | Anand Tiwari

Performances:
Vicky Kaushal steals the show. He is the life of the film and plays to the gallery and how. Triptii Dimri is a bit off in some scenes but overall, is quite good. She also puts up a fine act in the emotional scenes. Ammy Virk is superb in the entry scene after which he falters. He also gets a bit overpowered by Vicky. But in the second half, he maintains a strong position. Sheeba Chadha (Akhil’s mother) and Neha Dhupia (Ma Corona) leave a mark. Khayali Ram (Detective) is meant to be funny but he fails to raise laughs. Faisal Rashid (Dr Baweja) is decent. Ananya Panday and Neha Sharma are sizzling in cameos.

Music and other technical aspects:
The music is of chartbuster variety. ‘Tauba Tauba’ is played in the end credits, that too, on full screen and is terrific. Vicky looks quite hot in the track. ‘Mere Mehboob Mere Sanam’ is quirky while ‘Jaanam’ is sizzling. The other songs like ‘Rabb Warga’, ‘Haule Haule’ and ‘Raula Raula’ are okay.

Amar Mohile’s background score is in sync with the mood of the film. Rushi Sharma and Manoshi Nath’s costumes are stylish. Manini Mishra’s production house is too polished. Shaan Mohammed’s editing is slick.

Conclusion:
On the whole, BAD NEWZ is a fun-filled entertainer. At the box office, it will be patronized by the youth in a big way. As a result, it will take a healthy opening and rake in moolah for the producers.
